Blog Post Image: How red crabs on Christmas Island speak for the tropics

Allison Shaw (above), who conducted the work as a Princeton doctoral student in ecology and evolutionary biology, initiated the study while planning a trip to Christmas Island in 2009. She used global climate data to time her visit with the crabs’ migration, but climate alone did not seem to predict crab movement. After reading more about climate change and migration, Shaw realized that her finding that climate generally influences migration via rainfall was valuable.
