Blog Post Image: A Roly-Poly Pika Gathers Much Moss

University of Utah biology doctoral student Jo Varner collects vegetation from “haypiles” that pikas build beneath rockslides to store food for winter. Her study found pikas in Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge build smaller haypiles than pikas at high elevations because there is less snow cover and greater year-round access to a salad bar rich in moss.
