‘am’ is a short form of preposition and article together – an + dem = am
In German, you will always need these short forms of preposition and article. So get them:
an + dem = am
in + dem = im
bei + dem = beim
in + das = ins
an + das = ans
von + dem = vom
zu + dem = zum
zu + der = zur
